Chapter Eight

“Get your damn shoes on.” Brett stood in my bedroom doorway with a scowl. “Cynthia and I are taking you out.”

“I don’t want to go anywhere. I’ve told you that three times already.” I was perched on the edge of my bed in nothing but a pair of boxers.

“And I told you that you haven’t left the house except to go to work in two weeks, and that’s not healthy.” He moved closer.

I snorted. “I never used to go anywhere, and you didn’t bug me.”

“You bring up an interesting question. Why don’t you do stuff with Cliff anymore?” He studied me and his expression was confused. “You did shit together all the time, and now nothing for weeks?”

I dropped my gaze. “You should be glad. You didn’t want us hanging out anyway.”

He sighed, and leaned against the door frame. “Yeah, but then I saw what you were like when you were happy, and I changed my mind.”

“I’m perfectly happy,” I lied.

He snorted. “Sell it somewhere else dude.”

My shoulders bowed and I heaved a sigh. “Please leave me alone. I don’t want to go out.”

“What’s going on with you and Cliff?”

“Butt out, Mom.”

He pointed his finger at me. “Don’t be a jerk.”

Cynthia appeared behind Brett. “How’s our boy?” She tucked an unruly strand of blonde hair behind her ear. “Still refusing to put on pants?”

“Yes.” Brett sounded terse. “He’s being a stubborn dolt.”

Cynthia laughed nervously, and patted his shoulder. “What a smooth talker you are, honey.”

“Me? He started it.” Brett grumbled.

“Oh, boy.” Cynthia bit her lip.

I sighed. “Shouldn’t you two want to be alone? Like a normal couple?”

“Well, usually we would.” She looked to Brett hesitantly.

He shrugged. “Go ahead and tell him. It’s not a secret.”

“We kind of wanted you along tonight because it’s a special occasion.” She smiled, and held out her hand where a diamond ring sparkled. “We want to celebrate.”

I bugged my eyes and jumped up. “Holy shit. You’re engaged?”

She nodded. “Yep.” She leaned her head against Brett’s arm. “He popped the question last night.”

I moved to hug her, and she squeezed me tight. “Congrats.” I meant it. I liked Cynthia, and she was perfect for my brother. I straightened and turned to Brett to shake his hand. “You didn’t tell me you were going to propose.”

His cheeks were pink. “I was so nervous; I couldn’t talk about it.”

“Well, this is great news.” I squeezed his shoulder. “I’m really happy for you two.”

“Now do you see why we want to drag you with us?” She smiled. “It’s no fun toasting ourselves.”

I didn’t quite believe that was their only reason. I knew they were worried about me, but I didn’t see how I could get out of celebrating with them without looking rude. I glanced down at my boxers. “I’m not dressed. Plus, I need a shower.”

Brett shrugged. “We can wait. You have thirty minutes.”

“Why can’t I just meet you there? I’m taking my own car anyway. I don’t want to stay out late.”

Rolling his eyes, Brett said, “Because we don’t trust you to show up.
